zw art dayBright colors and an array of paintings, sculptures and artwork adorned the hallways of Zanewood Community School as students displayed their work during the World Art Day Expo on April 13.

With families and community members in attendance, all Zanewood students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade presented their artwork in three different formats: digital, visual and performing art.

“Our number one initiative with World Art Day was to introduce kids to the wide world of art,” said Kathryn Clingan, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) program coordinator at Zanewood. “We also wanted students to explore different art mediums so they think of art as more than just crayons and markers.”

To prepare for the expo, Clingan said Zanewood teachers planned art projects that integrated curriculum and standards. As a result, the artwork highlighted a number of topics and themes, ranging from music to history to literature.

World Art Day was another example of how Zanewood is infusing STEAM initiatives into student learning this school year. The school also held a cardboard engineering challenge last fall before hosting Scholars’ Choice Day earlier this spring.

“Our art expo was a team effort, but teachers Sara Welu and Emily James—along with our entire STEAM team—have been instrumental in planning and coordinating events this year,” Clingan noted.

In addition to hosting these same STEAM events next school year, Clingan said Zanewood students and staff will also focus on a yearlong theme of water—looking at it locally, globally, and through scientific and economic lenses.

“We’ve seen great results with our STEAM efforts this year, including increased joy and excitement for learning among students,” she added. “We feel really proud of the grassroots efforts that we’ve been able to do this year, but we are definitely on track to grow this [STEAM] program next year.”
