Due to the generosity of many, the District 279 Foundation was able to award a grant to Weaver in the amount of $2,242 for a fifth grade project: Putting STEM into Action – JA BizTown Stem Careers. Every Fifth Grade Weaver student participated in a full-day STEM Career Experience at JA BizTown. JA BizTown combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to a fully-interactive, simulated town. The day at BizTown focused on STEM skills including the scientific process, team work, critical thinking, math, and problem solving by allowing our students to apply STEM concepts in real world scenarios. The program helps students make the connection between what they learn in school and the real world. Students learn the basics of starting their own business and utilize the Engineering Design Process as they create and run their own STEM business.
Weaver Lake fifth graders got to spend the day working in STEM careers at JA BizTown on Wednesday, January 29th. They worked in teams to plan and carry out a business plan, interviewed for jobs, created slogans and jingles for their companies and also balanced their checkbooks throughout the day. This great learning opportunity was made possible through funding by the District 279 Foundation. We are so thankful for their support of Weaver Lake Elementary college and career readiness efforts! And also a huge thank you to the parent/guardian volunteers who helped throughout the whole process!
