fifth graders with new treeScholars at Weaver Lake Elementary: A Science, Math & Technology School had an opportunity to help reestablish a healthy tree canopy on their campus on Friday, September 20th.

"With support from a Hennepin County Healthy Tree Canopy Grant, our school was able to replace 13 trees that died due to invasive species or climate-related factors," said Karla Juetten, Curriculum Integration Coordinator at Weaver Lake.

Fifth graders, adult volunteers and Hennepin County staff planted the new trees last week; in the years ahead, these trees will support student learning at Weaver Lake in a variety of ways. For example, future second graders will tap into the sugar maples to observe the sap and learn about making syrup, while fifth graders will study invasive species, phenology and more.

By replacing the trees, students had a hands-on role in increasing the diversity and resiliency of the tree canopy around their school and improving the aesthetics of their site.

Weaver Lake Elementary received $2,400 in Healthy Tree Canopy Grant money for this project; statewide, Hennepin County awarded more than $250,000 to cities and schools this year.
