For the second year in a row, Osseo Area Schools was well represented at the Build ‘Em & Bust ‘Em event, held Feb. 23 at the University of Minnesota.

Sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, this annual event challenges participants to create bridges using toothpicks and glue. Structures are judged on their strength, creativity, weight and aesthetics. Nearly 100 Osseo students participated this year, representing Basswood, Birch Grove, Fernbrook, Park Brook, Rush Creek, and Woodland elementary schools.

When the final bridges were busted, several students from Osseo Area Schools took home awards, including (click students' names for photos):

“I utilize the Build ‘Em & Bust ‘Em process to encourage thinkers to be creative with their use of mathematical, scientific and technological concepts,” said Robin Moe, talent development, academic challenge and gifted support specialist at Edinbrook and Woodland elementary schools. “As students reflect upon engineering concepts in their design of a bridge…they inevitably experience many failures which help to develop confidence as learners. It is important for them to recognize failure as a learning tool, as well as acknowledge a need to maintain a growth mindset in all they do as lifelong learners.”
