The Spanish and Hmong for Native Speakers classes at Park Center Senior High were recently featured on the KARE-11 Sunrise show. Reporter Gia Vang interviewed students in teacher Pang Yang’s Hmong for Native Speakers class, along with Spanish language teacher Valerie Neri. According to the teachers, the language classes for native speakers inspire students to find their voice and be agents of change. Students who grew up speaking Hmong or Spanish at home benefit from support in first-language literacy instruction because their formal education may have been only in English. The classes also support students’ identity work.
