Previous: Youth Worker, Bridge Lakepoint Waunona Neighborhood Center I started at UW as a Nursing student. After volunteering at the local Children's Hospital and being rejected by the nursing school program, I realized my passion was working more closely with kids, on personal level. I took a social work class over fall term the same semester I was denied acceptance and actually loved it. Enrolled and was accepted into the Social Work program the following fall. I focused most of my courses on youth work and LGBT/women's studies. Along with school work, I had a year long service learning internship at Bridge LakePoint Waunona Neighborhood Center in south side Madison, where they provided programming to at-risk youth. I was a youth leader, working primarily with 1st through 6th graders, creating after school programming, leading activities, taking the kids on field trips, providing guidance, homework help, etc. By the end of the year, I was allowed to lead 5/6th graders and created a program for the center to use that would help the younger kids transition into the older, teen oriented programming. It was good, rewarding work; its was also the most mentally trying job I've ever held. I've seen and helped kids out of a lot of terrible situations, but it's shown me how resilient kids can be with just a little bit of support. That's why I love it, we can be that support. Once I graduated, I decided to move home to Minnesota, where I got my most recent job with PreferredOne. The job doesn't give me opportunities to work with kids, but it has given me the opportunity to work with people and make a difference as well. I continue to volunteer and stay involved with youth work, which is where I want to end up professionally down the road, maybe being a coordinator at a youth center. Right now though, I am passionate about both things, my current job, and social work. So I am continuing to do both in my own way. If anyone has any questions about UW-Madison, Social Work, Youth Work, moving out of state, feel free to connect them with me. I'm more than happy to talk about any of it.
