Students Connecting Through International Service, founded by Tammie Epley, is a program within the Osseo Area Schools. SCTIS provides an opportunity for six fifth-grade students across the district to participate in a service project to raise funds for school supplies for a school in Sasabe, Sonora, Mexico.  The elementary schools participating in this program are: Basswood, Edinbrook, Elm Creek, Oak View, Park Brook, and Rice Lake.

In early October, students who are interested, write an essay to explain why they are the best candidates to represent their schools for this project.  Staff members at each school read and rank the essays, without knowledge of who the students are, and the student with the highest ranking is chosen for the project.

The students meet twice-a-month to prepare for the trip and their fundraising.  The students learn about Mexican Culture, a few Spanish phrases, and they have pen pals at Sopori Elementary School in Amado, Arizona.  Each year a different principal from one of the elementary schools travels with the team.

The students who attend Juan Escutia Elementary school in Sasabe, need to provide their own school supplies, however, due to the poverty level and lack of stores, most students are unable to do so.  This project provides all of the school supplies for the students, along with supplies for the teachers and school.  Throughout the years, the students have raised funds to buy computers, printers, a copier, ceiling fans, water coolers, filing cabinets, space heaters, and many other important pieces of equipment.  Their fundraising has also helped install a playground and purchase a small school bus for the Sasabe students.

Each school hosts a School Supply Drive so students, staff and families of that school can donate money to this project.  Students who are members of the team have also reached out to their churches, family and other organizations that their families may be connected to.

The students participating receive a tremendous learning opportunity, and the school in Sasabe has been transformed.

The money the students raise is used for school supplies and other equipment for the school in Sasabe, Sonora, Mexico.  Trip expenses, such as flights, lodging and food are covered by generous donations from local community organizations, listed in alphabetical order:

  • Brooklyn Park Rotary
  • District 279 Foundation
  • Maple Grove Lions
  • Maple Grove Rotary
  • Osseo Lions
  • Piper Jaffray

While a part of Osseo Area Schools, Students Connecting Through International Service is also a 501(c)3.  If you are interested in supporting this project, please feel welcome to contact one of the elementary schools for information.
