Osseo Senior High OEC takes over 120 students to Fall Camp

The Fall 2013 OEC camp took place October 24 through 28th and the theme was 'Dare to Care'  Over 110 OSH students (involved in Osseo Senior High's First Responder program known as Opportunities in Emergency Care) joined students from Spring Lake Park and participated in intensive day and night training at Camp Wapogasset near Amery, Wisconsin.  Students learned about and experienced first aid and first responder training on topics such as CPR on the run (CPR done while on a gurney, in an ambulance), Firefighting 101 and several character and compassion focused seminars taught by professionals in the field.  The event depends on over 40 specialists in the field to provide training and facilitate the activities.

Parent, Connie Nelson, shared "OEC camp 'fills the tank' with knowledge, love, compassion, humbleness and just genuine 'want' for the need to be a better person.  It has changed my daughter's life."  Student, Amanda Pals, said "I learned more about what it means to be vulnerable.  I can now better understand how vulnerable a patient might feel in an emergency."  Maple Grove Senior High student Brad Lind says  "CPR on the run was fun but challenging.  To try to do CPR in the moving ambulance with turns and stops was crazy."

French Day at the MN Zoo

On February 5th, 2013, French students from Osseo Senior High’s AP program and Park Center Senior High’s IB program attended the French day at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, MN. This unique opportunity allowed students to learn more about the wildlife in the French speaking countries of Quebec and Guadeloupe, which they have been studying in class. All communication and presentations at the zoo were in French, thanks to this special event organized by the Minnesota Zoo. The funding of this project was made possible by the District 279 Foundation.

The students were able to explore tropical settings and spot exotic animals, such as the Komodo dragon, flamingos, and the many colorful fish found in the coral reef. At each exhibit, students listened to exciting presentations given by advanced French students and discovered more about the animals that they have been learning about in class. Upper level students from Osseo and Park Center were among those who presented at the zoo.  Throughout the day, the students were actively engaged with the presenters and communicated in French with other students from schools throughout the metro area. Most of the students said that they were able to understand almost all of the presentations and were inspired by the presenters’ ability to speak French. As a result, many students plan to continue learning French.
