Supt. Cory McIntyre recently informed families of graduating seniors that the University of Minnesota has canceled all June 2020 events at Mariucci Arena, including commencement ceremonies for all District 279 high schools. District leaders are now identifying alternate plans that are workable for all of our high schools. Read his message to families.
Dear Students and Families of graduating seniors:
Yesterday, state officials issued guidance for schools regarding graduation ceremonies. The guidance includes the prohibition of in-person gatherings, which means our district’s plan to hold in-person commencement ceremonies will not be able to take place. We will now proceed to plan for a virtual ceremony on the same date (July 25) we announced to you on April 24.
While we understand the rationale for the state guidance, we also know how disappointing it is to the members of the Class of 2020 and their families. We are sad, too.
A personal note to our seniors: You have had a year that none of us would have ever wished for you. I am sorry you will not be able to experience physically walking across the stage, receiving congratulatory hugs from your principals, and hearing the applause you so deserve.
Please know that we are working hard on a virtual commencement ceremony and other ways to honor you. We will finalize the virtual commencement plans by no later than the end of next week, and we’ll share them with you then. You’ll hear more directly from your respective schools regarding other ways to honor seniors yet this spring.
