Fine Arts Spotlight

Osseo Senior High fine arts students create fantastic and stunning works of art in their classes. They are able to compete in a variety of state and national level awards competitions.

Scholastic Awards

Osseo art students had an amazing showing at the Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards. Osseo students received 56 awards in the show. Students from around the state of Minnesota competed in 27 different categories of art. There are three tiers of awards: honorable mention (top 33% of entries), silver key (top 15% of entries), and gold key (top 5% of entries).

This year there were more than 4000 submissions from schools around the state. Gold and silver key winners will be on display at the Regis Art Center at the University of Minnesota from January 30 - February 17, 2018. An awards ceremony will be held at the Wiseman Art Center February 17, 2018 for the gold and silver key award winners. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest-running awards, most prestigious competition, and largest source of scholarships for creative teenagers in the United States. The awards program was created in 1923 by Maurice R. "Robbie" Robinson, founder of Scholastic Corporation, and has been administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers since 1994. It has an impressive legacy and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Joyce Carol Oates, and many others.

Orchestra

On October 26, 2017, the Osseo Senior High orchestras, conducted by Dr. Christa Dean, performed their English Suites concert with works by Purcell, Handel, Warlock, Holst, and the Beatles.

On December 4, 2017, the orchestra presented a Celebration of Carols to kick off the holiday season with traditional carols from Ukraine, England, Canada, and Puerto Rico with works by Vaughn Williams, Holst, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and more.

Sophomore violinist Jane Oh (below) was accepted to the ALL-STATE Orchestra, one of only twelve violinists in the state to receive this honor.

Other events included a guest clinic with Dr. Mark Laycock from Wichita State University in Kansas and a masterclass with the Meadowlark String Trio.

Spotlight Education is a Minnesota state theater education program run through the Hennepin Theatre Trust where registered school productions have multiple evaluators watch shows during its run. The evaluators provide notes/critiques for the actors, crew, pit and directors.

Osseo Senior High’s production of Hairspray received several awards and honorable mentions. Highlights from their feedback include:

“From the opening number, ‘Good Morning, Baltimore,’ we knew we were in for a production that would challenge us to think about how the characters and themes of 1962 Baltimore resonate in 2017 Osseo. We saw gender shifting and character pairing that might not have happened in 1962, but it awakened our thoughts to the themes of acceptance and challenge of cultural norms that needed to be addressed in the 60's, and still need attention today. Thanks for this subtle nudge.”

“Your large ensemble filled the wide proscenium [stage] with a big cast of teens, adults, and varied settings, allowing your audience to follow the action from the homes to studio to school and record shop, quickly and smoothly. Some of the most striking moments of your show came with the large ensemble on stage.”

“Having the pit in front of the stage always presents a challenge for balance, but in this case, the balance was strong.”

“You mentioned that this is a young, developing program. Clearly you have raised the bar for them to reach high with doing this show. I think what was presented was honest and earnest. The fact that you didn't have the space to rehearse in made your process more complicated. Kudos for adapting and adjusting to those complications.”

“I was touched in your notes as to why this show was chosen. It is clear that many of the goals behind the choice were reached. Congrats.”

When something stands out as extraordinary, the program will grant honors to the group and/or individuals. Osseo Senior High's cast and crew received the following honors, setting a record for the most individual honors, its first technical honor, and its first Overall Performance honor:

Congratulations, cast and crew!

Class Rank Change

Beginning with the class of 2018, class rank will no longer be reflected on the transcript; however, it will be added to the report card each trimester. Very few institutions require class rank recorded on the transcript for admissions purposes. If the institutions for which you are applying requires class rank reported on the transcript, simply file a request with your Career Resource Center (CRC) counselor or school registrar, and it will be added. Each trimester report card will have the student’s class rank and GPA (weighted and unweighted) included, and official transcripts will continue to reflect the student’s GPA (both weighted and unweighted). Please contact the CRC or your guidance counselor if you have any questions.
