The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is a rich educational experience offering rigorous academic challenges and life skills for students in grades 6 through 10. It consists of eight required subject areas that provide a broad foundation of knowledge. These include English (Language A), Language B (world language), Mathematics, Sciences, Arts, Health and Physical Education, Humanities (social studies) and Technology. Teachers draw from the exemplars from the world’s civilizations to help students develop an appreciation for all cultures, including their own. Subject matter is presented through five distinctive lenses called the Areas of Interaction. These include approaches to learning, health and social education, human ingenuity, community and service, and environment. They enable teachers and students to see relationships among subjects, ideas, and the world’s peoples. Students are challenged to evaluate information critically, seek out and explore connections between ideas, events and technological advances, and develop an awareness of the obligations and responsibilities of being a citizen of the nation and the world. The high standards demanded by the IB Middle Years Programme are ensured through the use of criterion-related, internationally-monitored assessment.
