North View Middle School will begin a phased withdrawal from the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP), beginning September 2018. During the phase-out, components of the MYP program will continue to be offered to current 6th and 7th graders until they complete 8th grade and move on to high school. Current 8th grade students will not be impacted in any way. Students entering as 6th graders next fall, however, will experience a traditional middle school program.

Supt. Kate Maguire approved the withdrawal from the MYP program because it will benefit students and support improved academic achievement by providing:

  • More instructional time in the core academic areas (40 additional hours per year in math, science, social studies and English).
  • Ability for students to choose from grade-level exploratory offerings according to their interests, instead of being required to take certain exploratory courses.
  • Alignment with the educational program at our other middle schools.

World language and music course options that have been part of the MYP program will continue to be offered through the end of the 2019-2020 school year in order to help current North View 6th and 7th grade students prepare for high school course registration. The programmatic change in focus will not affect transportation.

This gradual phase-out of the MYP program will help ensure that North View’s strengths can be preserved as the school transitions to a traditional middle school.

Questions about this programmatic change may be directed to Principal Diana Bledsoe at 763-585-7200.
