International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program is a rich educational experience offering rigorous academic challenges and life skills for students in grades 6 through 10. It consists of eight required subject areas that provide a broad foundation of knowledge. These include Language and Literature (English), Language Acquisition (Spanish or French), Mathematics, Sciences, Arts, Physical and Health Education, Individuals and Societies (Social Studies) and Design. Teachers draw from the exemplars from the world’s civilizations to help students develop an appreciation for all cultures, including their own. Subject matter is presented through six distinctive lenses called Global Contexts. These include:

  • Identities and relationships
  • Orientation in space and time
  • Personal and cultural expression
  • Scientific and technical innovation
  • Globalization and sustainability
  • Fairness and development

They enable teachers and students to see relationships among subjects, ideas, and the world’s peoples. Students are challenged to evaluate information critically, seek out and explore connections between ideas, events and technological advances, and develop an awareness of the obligations and responsibilities of being a citizen of our nation and the world.
