February 1 - February 28, 2019 

February has been designated as "I Love to Read" month at Basswood Elementary.  All students are encrouraged to record the number of minutes that they read during the month of February on their Read-a-thon envelope.  The Read-a-thon is the PTO's second big fund-raiser of the year. It helps fund things like visits from the naturalist, staff appreciation week, outdoor benches, the new circulation desk in the media center, and more!  There will be a prize for everyone who turns in their minutes as well as for the top fundraisers and the top readers  Student envelopes will be coming home on January 30th and should be returned by Friday, March 1.

Ways to Contribute:

Cash or check donations can be placed in the students' Read-a-thon envelopes.
Contribute through Pay Pal by clicking on the button at the bottom of this page.

Prizes for the Read-a-thon:

* Top 5 money-raisers will win lunch provided by the PTO with a staff memeber of their choice.

* Top 5 readers in each grade will win gift certificates to be used at the BOGO Scholastic Book Fair in June.

* Classroom with the most minutes read per grade will win a Hot Chocolate and Popcorn Party!

School Wide Reading Goal: 550,000 minutes
School Wide Fundraising Goal: $25,000


If we meet our reading goal, the top reader from each grade will get to pie a staff member!

The Basswood PTO is sponsoring a Science Project Expo in conjunction with Basswood Family Math and Science Night, providing an opportunity for all 3rd - 5th grade students to participate in a STEM event.

Basswood Science Project Expo Overview

Note: This is a research and experiment Science Project Exposition to teach students they can be real scientists - models and collections will not be included (e.g. erupting volcano, solar system, how electric motors work, tornado in a bottle, types of dinosaurs).

  • Presentations will take place at the Basswood Family Math and Science Night on February 28th, 2019 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
  • Participants: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders
  • Individual or 1 Partner Science Projects
  • 3rd Grade Scientists will research a science topic of interest and create a poster demonstrating knowledge gained of their topic to display for judging and at the Basswood Family Math and Science Night.



  • 4th and 5th Grade Scientists will use the Scientific Method to investigate a topic of interest, complete research and experiments, write a lab report, and create a presentation board to use while presenting to judges as well as attendees of the Basswood Family Math and Science Night.

February 28                 Basswood Family Math and Science Night

  • 6:00-8:00 PM - 3rd Grade Scientists will have their posters on display to view for attendees of Math and Science Night
  • 6:00-6:30 PM 4th Grade Scientists will display their project board, lab notes, and answer questions of attendees of Math and Science Night.
  • 6:45-7:15 PM 5th Grade Scientists will display their project board, lab notes, and answer questions of attendees of Math and Science Night.


THE FULL 12 PAGE PACKET IS AVAILABLE BELOW so students can start thinking about what they would like to research. A video is also available below so students can quickly walk students through the process and expectations for this event.

Box Tops Contest

February 19 – 22, 2019


Thank you in advance for participating in this year’s Box Tops contest! 

Again, this year, we are asking students to use the collection sheets and/or Ziploc bags to turn in their box tops.  This makes the sorting process much simpler!  A collection sheet will be sent home with each student in the Wednesday flyer packet. 

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for grades K-2 and 3-5.  The prizes are:

1st -  Extra recess with juice box and popcorn

2nd – Extra recess with juice box

3rd – Extra recess
