FreedomSchools2

The Children’s Defense Fund - Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes towards learning. Children are taught using a model pedagogy that supports children and families around five essential components: high-quality academic enrichment, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational leadership development, and nutrition, health and mental health.

Expo2018

This year the Basswood PTO is adding a Science Project Expo to the Basswood Family Math and Science Night to provide an opportunity for all 3rd - 5th grade students to participate in a STEM event.

This is a research and experiment event allowing students to implement what they have learned in class about the Scientific Method. Students can work alone or with one partner. They will put together a proposal and submit it for approval just like real scientists.

3rd Grade Scientists will research a science topic of interest and create a poster to demonstrate knowledge gained to display for judges as well as attendees of the Basswood Family Math and Science Night.

4th and 5th Grade Scientists will use the Scientific Method to investigate a topic of interest, complete research and experiments, write a lab report, and create a presentation board to use while presenting to judges as well as attendees of the Basswood Family Math and Science Night.

All students will have their work evaluated based on criteria given to them in their Science Project Expo Packet. Students meeting every criterion will earn a blue ribbon. Students meeting most of the criteria will receive a red ribbon. During the Expo, one student from each grade will be drawn for a Super Science Prize..
