Basswood Physical Education Overview
BB

Physical education encompasses the development of the total child through psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains of learning.

A student’s growth and development is guided through quality participation in these three domains.

Program goals are determined by the three major domains of learning:

  1. The psychomotor domain includes the development of all physical and neuromuscular skills.
    • application of physiological and biomechanical principles
    • motor and fitness skills that are necessary for continued participation in leisure and recreational activities
    • physiological, biomechanical & social principles
    • problem-solving, decision making, creativity
    • knowledge of language, rules, games, strategies, and etiquette: cultural knowledge & history of some activities
    • positive group interaction and communication
    • respect for self and others; sportsmanship, fair play, and competitive & cooperative actions
  1. The cognitive domain includes the knowledge, understanding, and application of information necessary for choosing activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.
  2. The affective domain includes the social aspects (emotion, feeling, attitude, value, model, appreciate) of learning.

Our aim is to enhance motor skills and basic knowledge and to provide the social interaction necessary for a daily and life long foundation. In essence, the purpose of physical education at Basswood Elementary is to encourage development of the total wellness of all individuals: physically, intellectually, and socially. The theme areas of the curriculum include body control, fitness, striking, receiving, and propelling. These themes will develop skills that can and will be applied in a variety of contexts.

Fitness Testing

runner

Fitnessgram fitness testing is done in the fall and spring of each school year. Standards for each test have been set by experts that represent levels of performance as it correlates to, “GOOD HEALTH”. The students are tested in the following areas using one of the tests listed after each area.

  • Cardio-respiratory endurance - one mile run/walk & Pacer (VIDEO)
  • Abdominal strength/endurance - sit-up (VIDEO)
  • Upper body strength/endurance - push-up (VIDEO)
  • Flexibility - sit and reach (VIDEO #1) (VIDEO #2)

Students fitness scores ARE part of their physical education grade. It is meant to provide parents and each child, of their current fitness levels; the areas of strength and the areas that need improvement.

The following are the fitness standards for boys and girls.

Participation/Tennis Shoes:

shoe

Tennis shoes are required for physical education class. It is important that proper tennis shoes are worn for the safety of your child and the safety of others as well. A good tennis shoe has arch support and is secured with Velcro or tied with laces across the top of the shoe.   Listed below are examples of shoes that do not meet acceptable standards for

phy ed class.

    • Roller shoes which are shoes with wheels on them.
    • Skateboard shoes (flat arched) shoes that do not give proper support to the ankles, feet and legs.
    • Tennis shoes that do not have full support around the ankle. ( e.g.) slip on tennis shoes or tennis shoes with a strap around the back.
    • Loosely laced tennis shoes that are not tied and secured on top of the shoes.
    • Hiking boots or plat form shoes.
    • Students will complete a “shoe do” sheet when they do not have tennis for class. This will ensure they are following along with what is taught on that day.
