At Birch Grove Elementary School for the Arts, reading is becoming a family affair—thanks in large part to the new Birch Grove Family Book Club.
Six times throughout the year, students and their families gather in the school’s Media Center to listen to a featured book club selection read aloud by a special guest. Birch Grove Assistant Principal Keisha Davis was the guest reader at the group’s first meeting in October.
“After reading, families set off to a classroom to meet each other and engage in teacher-led activities related to the book,” Davis said. “The scholars who participate in the night are entered into a drawing to win the book of the month. [In October] there were 25 lucky scholar winners!”
Created to promote stronger relationships and enhance communication between staff and families, the Birch Grove Family Book Club also provides students and their families with quality time together—all while encouraging greater learning and literacy skills. The program is funded by the District 279 Foundation, an organization that provides grants so students in Osseo Area Schools can engage in innovative learning opportunities.
Birch Grove Family Book Club meetings will resume in 2017 on the following dates: January 5, February 2, April 6 and May 4. The guest reader lineup includes University of Minnesota Gopher athletes and Osseo Area Schools Superintendent Kate Maguire.
